Experience in Multiple Secondary Chemistries

Secondary chemistries are more difficult to produce than primary chemistries, which is why most manufacturers typically specify a single chemistry. However, EaglePicher has experience with multiple secondary chemistries. We have provided designs for a wide range of applications, including defense uses, NASA missions and toy makers.

Lithium Ion Batteries

EaglePicher has placed the safety of secondary lithium batteries at the forefront of our R&D efforts. Research into nonflammable electrolytes as well as overcharge and discharge protection ensure that our line of secondary Li-ion batteries meets both performance and safety requirements. Additional research has led to the incorporation of nanomaterials into the active components to improve performance and cycle life. Lithium ion R&D activities have been funded through both internal and external sources.

Rechargeable lithium ion provides higher energy levels and longer cycle life, at a lower weight and smaller volume, with less maintenance than lead acid, Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries.

Silver Zinc Secondary Battery

Uses for EaglePicher’s silver zinc secondary batteries range from long-life service applications to manned space flights. Each is manufactured under exacting specifications to ensure that the capabilities are compatible with requirements. Cycle life, depending on design requirements and discharge depths, has been demonstrated in excess of 500 cycles.

These batteries, as in the primary system, are also rated as low- and high-rate systems. The secondary series can be manufactured either dry-charged or dry-uncharged. The high-rate secondary batteries may be discharged at sufficiently high rates to expend their energy in 15 minutes. The low-rate units provide best efficiencies at rates of four hours or greater. As with the primary batteries, voltage regulation at any discharge rate is good, and with moderate temperature control, storage in the dry condition is practical for up to five years.

Sealed Lead Acid (SLA)

Our lead acid line consists of several types of batteries. EaglePicher has been producing absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries since the late 1960s, and more recently expanded its line to include deep cycle batteries. Each battery design offers unique characteristics to accommodate the needs of SLA users today.

We offer a wide range of sizes and power for various applications around the globe. Our AGM batteries are most efficiently used in float applications, such as emergency lighting and telecommunications backup, while our deep cycle batteries are best suited to cyclic applications, such as wheelchairs and solar power. Our lead acid batteries are also found in military applications, high-reliability data storage backup systems and electric fence chargers.

EaglePicher Carefree® line of rechargeable batteries includes a wide range of chemistries to meet today’s expanding requirements for rechargeable battery power. This line includes valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA), nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) and lithium ion (Li-ion).
