Welcome to Yardney Technical Products Division

Yardney batteries started powering the Mars Rover 13 years ago — we’re still going strong!

EaglePicher Yardney Division is a technology-driven corporation focused on specialty battery technologies for research and product development in high-performance niche markets. Since 1944, Yardney has distinguished itself in the design, development and manufacture of specialty battery technologies for aerospace, the Department of Defense, and industrial/commercial applications.

Specialty battery technologies include Yardney Technical Products (YTP) silver zinc, silver cadmium, nickel hydrogen and magnesium silver chloride batteries, as well as lithium ion cells and batteries. The business strategy of the Yardney Division is to serve demanding government and commercial niche markets with a custom-fit, high-quality design that is capable of withstanding demanding load profiles in a wide variety of environments.

The Yardney Mission

Our mission is to lead rechargeable battery technology, product development and system solutions to enable market growth for EaglePicher across the following business units:

  • Defense
  • Aviation
  • Space
  • Medical

The Yardney Center of Excellence

Yardney is a leader in the advancement of high-power and high-energy rechargeable cell and battery designs. Our R&D capabilities allow us to continually push the boundaries of performance and safety in our quest for improvement. Located in East Greenwich, RI, the Tech Center is home to 35 engineers and scientists who maintain close collaborations with research universities and startup companies in the “Northeast Battery Technology Corridor,” which also includes Navy research and government technology centers. We contribute our expertise in mission-enabling new products for defense, aviation, UAVs, space, and directed energy system/weapons applications.

Our Capabilities

EaglePicher’s Yardney technical division primarily focuses on lithium ion and silver zinc technology.

Lithium Ion

Yardney Technical Products, Inc. acquired the Lithium Battery Operations of GTE in 1988, and has been developing its own lithium ion chemistry since 1995. Under contracts with the Department of Defense, NASA, other Government Agencies and several Major Defense Contractors, the Yardney lithium ion battery team has designed, developed and delivered Li-ion batteries for such notable programs as the Air Force B-2 Bomber and Global Hawk/Triton reconnaissance aircraft; the NASA Mars Lander mission (Phoenix); and the three Mars Explorer Rovers (Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity). Recent developments include high power designs for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Directed Energy Weapons.

Silver Zinc

Yardney has been supplying the U.S. military with technologically advanced battery systems since 1944. With an outstanding record of safety and typical cell level specific energies of greater than 185 Wh/kg and energy densities of greater than 700 Wh/L, our silver zinc batteries offer a unique weight and volume solution to many aerospace requirements

Cell and Battery Designs and Analysis

Capabilities in this sphere include design for manufacturing and automation, safety enhancements, and materials evaluation and development.
