EaglePicher Extends Space Technology to Commercial Battery Applications
JOPLIN, Missouri, October 15, 2002 - EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, a leader in the advanced energy storage industry, announced that it will expand its emphasis on the custom packaging segment of the commercial battery business. Custom packaging involves the assembly of individual power cells into a configuration that meets a customer's specific needs.
"EaglePicher is licensed for all cell chemistries and has government clearances already in place," said Craig Kitchen, CEO of EaglePicher Technologies. "Based on our extensive experience with multiple technologies, we can solve our customers' exacting custom power problems. We have the know-how to select the right chemistry, design environmentally-sound packaging and add control electronics."
Kitchen added, "EaglePicher excels at custom design when stringent specifications are required". As an example, the company recently completed the design and prototyping of a battery package for the Bio-SeeqTM Hand-held PCR Detector, manufactured by Smiths Detection - Edgewood, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Smiths Group, plc. This portable biological agent detector utilizes polymerase chain reaction technology and can simultaneously detect viral and bacterial pathogens, an important feature for Homeland Defense. The high-energy battery package developed by EaglePicher allows for portable, multi-sampling field use. EaglePicher, which has driven state-of-the-art battery technology and circuitry solutions for over 50 years, expects such hi-tech battery packaging solutions to be critical to successful portable and hand-held field technology.
EaglePicher brings extensive Defense and Aerospace packaging experience to the commercial segment. The company manufactured the batteries that brought Apollo 13 home safely and has supplied uninterrupted auxiliary power to the Hubble Space Telescope for the last 14 years. Today, EaglePicher is driving innovations for multiple battery chemistries including advanced Lithium technologies for portable and implantable medical devices, Homeland security, robotics and other specialty packaging applications. Additionally, EaglePicher is a leader in the design and fabrication of battery support components, such as smart battery electronics and battery charging systems. Kitchen further affirmed, "If there is a need for a reliable, light-weight, high-output, long-life power and technology solution, EaglePicher can address it. We have made a commitment to our customers that we will be, simply the best."
